Reflecting on the radiant days we’ve enjoyed at the Black Farmers Market, we’re reminded of the vibrant community spirit that thrives under the sun’s embrace. September 2023 marked a significant return for us, as the market buzzed with growers, small Black business owners, workshop leaders, and the infectious energy of our wonderful DJ, MC Scandal. The warm, sunny weather not only highlighted the bounty of the harvest season but also illuminated the dedication and passion of everyone involved.
The Black Growth team (formerly Black Farmer’s Market CIC) approached the idea of hosting a second market with both excitement and trepidation. While the demand was undeniable and our traders were eager to participate, balancing the workload was a challenge—two out of our three team members were still working full-time jobs. Adding to the uncertainty was the ever-unpredictable British weather. If you’re from the UK, you know how rare it is to catch a sunny spell, especially in September and October! Thankfully, luck was on our side. Both of our 2023 markets enjoyed clear skies and mild weather, with the September market graced by a high of 27°C—a true gift for growers and visitors alike.
As we look ahead, our intention is to expand the market’s presence during future harvest seasons. By hosting more frequent markets, we aim to provide greater opportunities for growers to showcase their produce and for the community to access fresh, locally-sourced goods. This expansion will also allow more small Black growers to present their unique products, fostering economic growth within our community. We plan to introduce additional workshops to educate attendees on sustainable practices and healthy living, further enriching the market experience. With the continued support of our community and the hopeful blessing of more sunny days, we are excited to see the Black Farmers Market flourish in the seasons to come.
